          Joel D. Broersma, CFP®, EA
Joel Broersma, CFP® professional, EA, has been in the financial services industry since 1996. In 2004, Joel co-founded Pathway Financial Design, LLC alongside Dan Korhorn, CWS®. He holds his Series 6, 63, and 26 securities registrations as well as life and health insurance, and property and casualty insurance licenses in Michigan. Joel has also earned his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification, and has been an Enrolled Agent with the IRS since 2011.
Taxes are a huge part of anyone’s financial picture, and mitigating taxes can help increase a person’s overall net worth. Joel is the CEO of Pathway Financial Design as well as CEO of their sister firm, HBW Partners Tax Services LLC. As an Enrolled Agent, Joel has the ability to represent clients before the IRS if ever needed.
Joel works “hands-on” in the office on a daily basis and enjoys studying the ongoing changes in the industry. He is and always has been passionate about serving people.
”At Pathway Financial Design, we believe that you should have one primary advisor to help you navigate all of life’s financial obstacles.”
— Joel Broersma
Joel continues, “We started Pathway in 2004 because we wanted to be completely independent and have access to all the top carriers and companies that have financial solutions for the clients we serve. We are a resource for clients where they can get all things financial handled through one company and one relationship. I chose to be a financial planner to help people, serve them, offer answers to problems and make their financial lives easier to manage.”
In addition to working as a financial planner with multigenerational families, Joel also works with small business owners. “Before doing this, I was in real estate as a Realtor® for about a year and had rental properties. Prior to that, I installed carpeting with my dad for five years. Needless to say, we are not a typical stuffy group of people in suits. We roll up our sleeves and sit kneecap-to-kneecap while we help clients with their challenges. We don’t require big minimums; in fact, there is no minimum to work with us. Because we came out of the construction industry, we have a ‘just get the job done’ mentality,” Joel says. “I spend a lot of time making sure all of our advisors at Pathway Financial Design understand this, and they are trained and ready to take our firm to the next level while serving our community.”
Joel’s favorite part of his work is seeing clients achieve their goals. “Whether that be retirement, paying debt off, going to college, following their business pursuits … throughout the years I’ve been in the industry, it has always been the greatest feeling to watch others succeed.”
Originally from Byron Center, Michigan, a small town on the south side of West Michigan, Joel now lives in Montague. He and his wife, high school sweetheart Sue Broersma, have been married since 1991 and have three grown children, Kellie, Heidi, and Micah, and seven grandchildren.
He and Sue bought acreage in Montague, Michigan, and they enjoy overseeing and maintaining their property. On weekends, they spend quality time with their kids and grandkids, and over the summer, they enjoy boating with the family and exploring Lake Michigan, along with touring in their 1979 Chevy stepside pickup.
Joel has just become involved in a “church plant” in Whitehall, Michigan, which he is finding very enjoyable! Joel and Sue are excited to see how the Lord uses this church to further His kingdom.
